Stop the proposed padel courts at The Leicestershire Golf Club
The Issue
For members and residents of The Leicestershire Golf Club community, the proposal to develop four padel courts alongside the 18th hole is not just an alteration in the landscape, it is a disruption to our cherished way of life. As a long-standing member of this club, I, like many others, have valued the tranquility and historic charm this club brings to our local community. This golf club is not merely a place for sport; it is a sanctuary where friendships are forged, minds are cleared, and a piece of Leicester's heritage is preserved.
The construction of these courts threatens not only to alter the aesthetic landscape of a club established over 100 years ago, but to also disrupt the quiet enjoyment of golfers and local residents alike. Padel courts, with their inevitable influx of players and spectators, will introduce noise, congestion, and increased foot traffic in areas designed to be serene and reserved.
There is concern about introducing publicans who are without golfing etiquette standards frequenting club facilities including the men’s and ladies locker rooms and the members bar. Not to mention encroaching upon the practice green area and beyond.
Moreover, the environmental impact of developing these courts cannot be ignored. Current green spaces are vital for local biodiversity, offering habitat to numerous bird species and maintaining the ecological balance. Replacing these with concrete courts flies in the face of environmental conservation efforts we have fought so hard to uphold.
Economically, while some argue that these courts might attract more visitors and revenue, it’s important to note that the wellbeing of our current members and community harmony could be compromised. This isn't about resisting change or progression, but about recognising what truly adds value to our community and preserving it.
Instead of building padel courts on the 18th hole, we propose that they could be built in other less disruptive locations on the golf course.
We urge the management and local authorities to reconsider this proposal, considering the long-term impact on the heritage, environment, and community spirit that has been meticulously nurtured over the decades.
If over 25 members decide to leave directly because of the padel courts, the revenue expected will be voided by the loss from their annual subscriptions.
Please stand with us against this development and advocate for a solution that respects the rich history and community needs of The Leicestershire Golf Club. Sign this petition to make our voices heard.
