The Issue

I am writing this petition with a personal plea for understanding and action. As someone who is on the Autism spectrum, I frequently rely on public transportation to get to and from work when I am unable to get a ride with someone else. The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) bus system is my lifeline to independence and employment. However, proposed changes to the TARC bus routes in Louisville, Kentucky threaten to disrupt this vital service, not only for me but for countless others who depend on these routes daily.

The proposed changes include the reduction or elimination of numerous bus routes that provide essential connections throughout the city. These changes are likely to impact individuals who, like me, rely on public transit as their primary mode of transportation. For many residents, TARC buses provide the only feasible and affordable means to reach their workplaces, schools, and healthcare services. Cutting or altering these routes will disproportionately affect low-income families, people with disabilities, and elderly citizens, exacerbating existing inequalities.

TARC serves approximately 12 million rides annually, according to official reports. Alterations that cut down on services will result in a significant decrease in accessibility and increase in travel time, which can severely impact the everyday lives of those who depend on it the most. Public transportation is more than just a commute; it represents opportunity, inclusion, and mobility for thousands of Louisville residents.

Moreover, the changes contradict recent efforts to make our city more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Reducing public transport options will likely force more people to depend on personal vehicles, increasing traffic congestion and urban pollution.

We urge the decision-makers at TARC and local government leaders to reconsider these changes. Instead of cutting routes, we should explore expanding services, modernizing the fleet with eco-friendly buses, and making the system more efficient. We need to preserve the reliability and accessibility of our public transport to ensure it continues to serve everyone irrespective of their background or economic status.

Your signature on this petition is crucial. It is a call to maintain and enhance our city's public transport system, securing its role as a vital part of our community's infrastructure. Please join us in urging TARC officials to keep the bus routes unchanged and invest in an inclusive future for all of Louisville. Sign this petition and make your voice heard!
