The Issue

We, the undersigned residents at Promenade at John Tyler Condominium Association,LLC strongly oppose the current proposal of a self storage facility to be located at 5299 and 5303 John Tyler Highway.

As owners, we have always cherished the peaceful environment our neighborhood offers, where residents embrace a sense of community and pride in our surroundings.

However, this tranquility is now under threat. A developer is proposing to build a self storage warehouse in our neighborhood, which could have far-reaching impacts on our quality of life and the character of our community.

The proposed construction will inevitably lead to increased traffic, jeopardizing the safety of our children and pedestrians.

Self Storage warehouses often require frequent loading and unloading activities, leading to more trucks and heavy vehicles on our neighborhood streets and damaging our private  roads. This not only poses a risk to our safety but also contributes significantly to noise pollution, disrupting the peace that we all value.

Moreover, there are concerns about crime and security. Storage facilities, especially large ones, can sometimes become targets for criminal activities, impacting the overall security of our community. The increase in noise, coupled with potential lighting and visual pollution, threatens the serenity and charm that drew us to live here in the first place.

There is credible evidence that such developments can negatively affect property values and deter potential buyers who seek a quiet, family-friendly environment. Our homes are investments for our future, and we should protect their worth and the essence of our neighborhood.

We must also consider the environmental impact. The construction and operation of a self storage warehouse can contribute to loss of green space, heat and pollution, affecting the local ecosystem. The removal of existing vegetation can also lead to soil erosion and  changes to water drainage and  add to increased runoff. Not to mention, it increases the risk of fire hazards, potentially overwhelming our local emergency services.

Our community’s “small town” feel and welfare deserves priority over corporate interests. We   want to preserve our neighborhood's character and ensure a safe, pleasant environment for families now and in the future. Mixed use development should create a vibrant small town environment that brings compatible land use and public amenities with a focus on place-making, which this proposed plan does not.

As James City County's Character Goal  CC 3 clearly states “Preserve and enhance neighborhood and community appearance”.This proposed plan does the opposite.

We urge you to support this petition to prevent the construction of the self storage warehouse.

By signing, you help protect the quality of life and security that we have come to cherish in our neighborhood. Join us in making a stand for our community.

Thank you for your time, attention, and dedication to our community.
