'Our democracy relies on press freedom. Good journalism exposes wrongdoing and injustice, it scrutinises people in power and it champions truth. '

Why then is she privatising Channel 4, home to Untold Stories, Dispatches, Channel 4 News and the acclaimed Unreported World? When 96% of those who responded to the government's consultation are against it?

So many people signing this petition are leaving comments in particular about the news. They say that Channel 4 News is their most trusted source of news, and that they don't want the government - whoever is in power at any given time - to not be held to account.

We don't want what feels like a relentless increase in control of our country's media.

We don't want the undermining of its freedom and independence to continue unchecked.

It is not enough to tweet on World Press Freedom Day when on every other day of the year journalistic independence is being thwarted by the control of the owners of our media. 

We own Channel 4, not billionaires with their own agendas to protect power, greed, privilege and injustice.

We do.

If Channel 4 is sold to the highest bidder the news and independent journalism will not be protected - because it is a threat to power and doesn't make profit.

According to the Good Law Project 

The Government has wasted more than £9.9 billion on PPE, which is more than it would cost to give every nurse in the NHS a 100 per cent bonus on their salary. 

At at time when people are fearful about the soaring cost of living, we need independent news to hold government to account for their waste and recklessness with public money. Our money.

Immense amounts of public money has been shamelessly wasted lining the pockets of their mates. This is wrong-doing. This is injustice. 

Selling Channel 4 for 2 billion is just more waste. A wrecking ball to a beloved, trusted broadcaster - to get some ready cash for the government and to silence news.  It's not good enough.

Channel 4 once gone, won't return.  

All of us who love Great British Bake Off, Gogglebox, Derry Girls,  -

and who trust the critically acclaimed Unreported World, Dispatches, Untold Stories and Channel 4 News to report the truth - will do what we can to prevent Channel 4 from this vandalism.
