This was a comment made yesterday by Julia King when she signed this petition.

It's a good question.

In 2019 Channel 4 News swept up at the TV journalism awards after the Cambridge Analytica scoop

In a record night for Channel 4 News, the programme took home a total of seven gongs at the prestigious Royal Television Society awards. As well as multiple awards for the Cambridge Analytica investigation, the programme was also named Daily News Programme of the Year.

In the 2010s, personal data belonging to millions of Facebook users was collected without their consent by British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, predominantly to be used for political advertising.  Their clients included the Trump campaign in the US and the Leave campaign in the UK.

Is this relevant to why the government is keen to privatise Channel 4?

How, in a supposed democracy, can politicians be held to account if the media is hamstrung? 

If profit over people is the guiding principle then how will the corruption of the rich, the greedy, the powerful be held up to scrutiny?

How will we be kept informed?

Not lied to? Not manipulated? Not controlled?

Channel 4 News has been one of the most trusted sources of news at a time when disinformation has been swamping our world.  

This government must not be allowed to suppress independent news. 
The government must not be allowed to control the truth.

We must protect democracy. 
We must protect what we don't want to lose.
Before it's too late.
