Stop the Port Chalmers State Housing Land Sell-Off

The issue

We call on Kāinga Ora to retain the social housing land in Albertson Avenue, Port Chalmers. This locally important land was listed for sale on trademe on August 28th 2025, with no prior community engagement.

In late 2023, the 6 social housing apartments on the site were demolished to make way for 11 brand new social housing units. Existing tenants who had to move out were offered homes there when the rebuild was complete.

But earlier this year the rebuild was cancelled. After nearly one million dollars has been spent on the project, there's now just an empty plot of land where 6 homes used to be.

As of June 2025 there were 378 applicants on the Dunedin Housing Register, our social housing waiting list.

Kāinga Ora has acknowledged that the Albertson Ave site is well placed for social housing. It is close to schools, ECE's, shops, open spaces, doctors, public transport etc... But once this land is sold, that's it.

The leadership of Kāinga Ora should halt this sales process, and engage in discussions with our community about the future of the site.
