Stop the Poisoning of Stray Animals on the Island of Kefalonia, Greece

The Issue

Stray animals are being poisoned in the heart of Kefalonia’s capital— and no one is being held accountable.

Recent reports and testimonies from local residents confirm that multiple stray animals have been found dead by poisoning in central areas of the island. These animals — many of whom were fed and cared for by the community — suffered slow, cruel deaths. No investigation has been announced. No surveillance footage has been reviewed. No one has taken responsibility.

There is a concern that this is not random — that these poisonings might be part of an effort to "clean up" the island in preparation for the tourist season. But no form of tourism, development, or image-management justifies cruelty. A place that hides suffering behind its postcards is not a paradise.

We, the undersigned, demand that the local municipality, the police, and all responsible authorities:

  • Launch a full investigation into the poisonings, including a review of surveillance footage in the areas where incidents occurred.
  • Publicly condemn these acts and commit to holding perpetrators accountable.
  • Work with local animal welfare organizations to develop a humane, long-term strategy for stray animal care — including sterilization, feeding programs, and safe shelters.
  • Increase transparency and communication with the public about the steps being taken to ensure this never happens again.
     To the Visitors of Kefalonia:
  • We also call on travelers, both current and future, to travel consciously and choose destinations that uphold basic compassion and ethical standards.
  • Ask how a place treats its animals and its environment.
  • Speak up if you witness abuse or indifference.
  • Support local businesses that care for animals and do not turn a blind eye.
  • Help amplify the voices of those trying to make things better.

Where we travel and how we travel matters. Tourism should support communities — not enable silence, fear, or violence.

We urge all visitors to Kefalonia and beyond: choose your destinations wisely. A beautiful landscape means little if it hides deliberate cruelty. Demand better — because your presence, voice, and values can shape the future of the places you visit.

This petition is written by concerned individuals with deep ties to the island.

Let this be a first step toward justice — and kindness.
