The Issue

The Idaho Falls Downtown Development Corporation  is planning to charge for all on-street parking, via a payment app.  The planned implementation of these new parking rules in downtown Idaho Falls is not just an inconvenience; it's punitive to customers, employees, and small business owners. As someone who owns a business and works in this vibrant community, I have witnessed firsthand how these changes threaten the economic vitality of our beloved downtown.

Local businesses that thrive on customer foot traffic are at risk. These new parking restrictions will significantly reduce the revenue streams for many downtown businesses.  It's not just about parking; it's about protecting the heartbeat of Idaho Falls—the small enterprises and dedicated individuals who rely on these customers daily.

The policy not only inconveniences customers but also places undue stress on employees who ensure that these enterprises run smoothly. For many workers, affordable and accessible parking is crucial for their daily commutes. These new rules force both workers and patrons to face additional challenges that could deter them from downtown entirely.

Historically, favorable parking arrangements have played an essential role in maintaining the attractiveness and accessibility of city centers. Numerous studies indicate that restrictive parking policies can lead to a decrease in downtown visitors, ultimately resulting in reduced economic activity. Our downtown’s ambiance and financial prosperity are at stake, and these new regulations are incompatible with our community's needs.

We urge the city council and Idaho Falls Downtown Development Corporation to reconsider these harmful parking regulations. Instead of stifling our downtown economy, consult with community members to explore alternative strategies that can accommodate growth without burdening our citizens and small businesses.

By signing this petition, you stand with the residents and business owners of downtown Idaho Falls who strive to preserve its economic health and community spirit. Your support is pivotal in helping us urge decision-makers to amend these new parking rules.

Happy to say my position is to listen to the business owners and our constituents. We will find a way forward, we all want the downtown to thrive. Eventually we will need paid parking as we grow, all major cities do, but I want to hear what data point to use to know when we cross over into the place where we are losing business because there is never any available parking. This is currently out of the city councils hands, we do not manage the parking, the genius has been a collective of business owners in the DDC have managed this parking, for awhile, we may have a chance to weigh in, at some point. That will be in the future, and I will value this petition and others feedback to find a way forward.
