The Pilot Butte Power Plant Conveyance Act proposes transferring 110,000 acres of treaty land from the Wind River Tribes on the Wind River Reservation to the State of Wyoming. This land, guaranteed under treaties, is central to the tribes' cultural, historical, and economic identity. Despite its profound implications, the tribes were never consulted, disregarding their sovereignty and rights.
This act directly undermines Wyoming's self-proclaimed status as the "Equality State." True equality means honoring commitments and respecting the rights of all people, especially Indigenous communities who have faced centuries of land theft and systemic injustice. Stealing tribal land in the name of progress is not a celebration of equality but a betrayal of it. Wyoming can set a better example by upholding justice and engaging in meaningful consultation with the tribes.
