The U.S. Department of War has spent more than $35 million since 2019 paying foreign laboratories to run experiments on animals — and the price these animals pay is brutal. Rats are scalded in near-boiling water. Dogs are made sick. Mini-pigs are mutilated. Octopuses are cut open. Animals are blinded. None of this happens on U.S. soil, but it happens with U.S. tax dollars.

More than $21 million of that funding has gone to labs in Canada alone. In one of these experiments, at the University of British Columbia, mice are strangled, deprived of oxygen, and given brain injuries in an attempt to model "intimate partner violence" in humans — a level of suffering that does little to help real survivors and everything to keep a wasteful, cruel funding pipeline running.

This isn't a national security program. It's taxpayer money being funneled into pain that Americans never agreed to pay for, carried out an ocean away from the oversight that might otherwise stop it.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has the authority to end this. The Pentagon doesn't need to bankroll animal cruelty overseas to fund research — modern, human-relevant methods exist that don't require an animal to suffer through it.

No rat, dog, mini-pig, octopus, or mouse should be scalded, mutilated, blinded, or strangled because a foreign lab found a way to bill the U.S. military for it.
