Message from the NO CO2 Peak Cluster Pipeline Group in Cheshire:

"We need your help - Sunday 28th June, at 12pm, residents of Cheshire East are invited to take part in a protest at Waters Green, by Macclesfield train station, to oppose the heinous proposal that is the Peak Cluster CO2 pipeline.Many people are unaware of what this will mean for the area.

The Adlington New Town proposal was a planned new town

The Peak Cluster plan involves INDUSTRIALISATION of the East Cheshire countryside
The effects will be life changing, long term and redefine how Cheshire East is experienced by lived residents and visitors.

It will involve installation of noisy, visually intrusive AGI factories on the periphery of Macclesfield, severely damaging the beautiful countryside views that give the area its identity. People of Gawsworth and Macclesfield will experience significant noise and light pollution, as industrial sites the size of 5 or more football fields will be placed in very close proximity to built populations.

It will involve the felling of hundreds, if not thousands of trees through the semi rural areas of Pott Shrigley, Adlington, Prestbury, Henbury, and Gawsworth. A 40m wide corridor for a length of several miles will be excavated to install the pipeline, this excavation will inflict severe ecological stress on the diverse wildlife in the area, leading to a likely significant drop in deer and bird populations, that are extremely sensitive to human activity.

It will involve placement of high pressure gas and liquid phase CO2 at pressures of above 20 bar. If the pipeline leaks, there’s the potential for mass asphyxiation to the population. Modelling has already shown the populated areas along the pipeline are situated close enough to be considered at risk in the event of a large scale pipeline rupture. And this is NOT impossible - a CO2 pipeline rupture in Satartia, Mississippi 2020 led to the hospitalisation of 49 residents - some 3 miles from the rupture point. The UK government have initiated Project Skylark to better understand the risks involved with placing a high pressure CO2 pipeline in close proximity to large populations. This represents an unprecedented potential consequence hazard that is not replicated in any other populated area. The government, and various other international authorities have concluded the behavior and risk associated with CO2 pipelines in populated areas warrants further research for safety reasons - and this project is being pushed for planning before said research is concluded.

This is a NO BRAINER.

It is extremely unfair for East Cheshire (and residents along the length of the pipeline), to be expected to consume unquantified risk from a high consequence gas.

It is extremely unfair for the residents and businesses to suffer loss of character of their area.
And what’s most striking - is that alternative, more expensive forms of CO2 capture and transport, and low carbon concrete methods are available.

The low-cost nature of the transport methods, relative to other methods, means the government is expected to amass a high profit margin from activities associated with the project - including the potential for Europe to commission the UK to use the pipeline for Carbon storage from their industry.

The price of the profit and low cost nature of this method is being transferred to the loss of quality of life and physical hazard that the residents would consume.

You need to realise - we WILL pay the price, not directly, but through the severe environmental degradation, loss of place identity and physical hazard associated with the project.

What is the purpose of the protest?

To show our local authority, Cheshire East, who remain on the fence about the issue, that the residents they serve are united against the conversion of the value of the area to profit for large scale, unnecessary carbon capture schemes. Cheshire East is the only local authority with land on the proposed route not to formally object against it.

This is unacceptable.

We will also show our local MP, Tim Roca, the level of opposition present.
