Stop the Passage of the "Choose Act" in the Alabama Legislature!
The Issue
I am a student at Lexington High School. My parents have dedicated their lives to teaching and coaching in small rural public schools. The proposed Choose Act threatens to divert much-needed funds away from Alabama public schools.
The Choose Act, if passed, would funnel resources away from public schools towards private schools, undermining the quality of education that we can provide for all of Alabama's citizens. It advances an uneven playing field where only those who can afford private schooling get access to the best resources. Public schools serve everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. Therefore, the Legislature should adequately fund public schools to ensure all children receive a high-quality education.
Those who support the bill want citizens to believe these vouchers are giving underprivileged students a choice to attend private schools. The proposed $7000 per year in the Choose Act would cover only 30-66% of the annual average cost of private school tuition. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average Alabama private elementary school tuition is $10,600, and the average high school is $22,600 annually. The intent of this bill appears to be taking limited valuable resources away from the schools, students, and communities that need them most.
Please sign this petition today to let your legislators know you want to protect Alabama's future by ensuring every child has access to a well-funded public school system.
