Stop the Overflow — Fund Cat Rescues Across Louisiana

The Issue

Right now, cat rescues and animal shelters across Louisiana are at a breaking point.

With the rising cost of rent, groceries, and basic necessities, more and more families are being forced to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their beloved cats and kittens. Inflation isn’t just squeezing household budgets — it’s also overwhelming our shelters and rescues.

Across the state, cat rooms are packed far beyond capacity. Fosters are full. Every day, tiny kittens are found abandoned, and adult cats are being surrendered with nowhere safe to go. Staff and volunteers are exhausted, underfunded, and stretched to the breaking point. Some shelters are being forced to consider euthanasia — not because they want to, but because they simply don’t have the space or resources to care for the ever-growing number of cats in need.

No one should have to give up their cat because they can’t afford food or vet care — and no rescue or shelter should have to turn away a cat in crisis because of a lack of funding.

We’re calling on the Louisiana Legislature and Governor to immediately approve emergency fundingfor municipal and nonprofit cat rescues and animal shelters across the state. This funding should be used to:

 • Expand capacity to house more cats and kittens

 • Support community cat food banks to help families in need

 • Provide emergency vet care for sick, injured, and surrendered cats

 • Help families keep their cats through temporary financial assistance

These are not luxuries — they’re urgent, life-saving measures. The state has stepped up before in times of disaster, and right now, this is a disaster for cats and the people who love them.

With your signature, we can show lawmakers that Louisianans care about our cats, our communities, and our shelters.

Sign this petition today — because every cat deserves safety, and every family deserves support.
