The Issue

Paterson, New Jersey, my beloved city, is changing faster than ever— and not in ways that are helping those of us who live here. Without a doubt, Paterson has welcomed many new residents over the past few years. It's a city with a unique history, rich in diversity and culture, but this growth has come with significant challenges. Once a community known for its tight-knit neighborhoods and mutual support, Paterson is now struggling under the weight of overdevelopment.

Thousands of people are moving from New York and other parts of the world, seeking refuge and new beginnings. While the influx of people is a testament to our city's appeal and opportunities, it has also driven rent prices through the roof, unfairly impacting long-time Patersonians who can no longer afford to live in the neighborhoods they call home. They are being priced out, a phenomenon that should never occur in a community where everyone deserves a fair chance to thrive.

The situation has worsened as developers push for more apartment buildings, exploiting the 20-30 year tax abatement and ignoring the strain on our infrastructure. Paterson’s roads, public transportation, and utilities were never designed to handle such a rapid expansion. Our infrastructure is 160 years old with no modern upgrades or tender love and care put into it.

Our schools are overcrowded, traffic delays worsen daily, and emergency services are stretched thin. The construction of yet another high-rise is neither a viable nor sustainable solution.

What Paterson needs is balanced, considerate urban planning. With a governing body that gets along for the sake of the quality of life for Patersonians. We must advocate for smarter alternatives like the renovation of existing housing stock, and the creation of affordable housing developments with strict rent controls. Also invest in the improvement of our youth by supplying recreational buildings to build them up for life. As well as the investing in the expelling of the cities homeless and helpless population. City officials and urban developers must prioritize the needs of current residents over the allure of quick profit.

It's time we took a stand against this unchecked growth. By halting plans for new high-rise apartment complexes, we can protect the homes and livelihoods of current residents and preserve the community character of Paterson.

Please join me in asking our city leaders to stop approving new apartment buildings until a comprehensive, sustainable plan is put in place that meets the needs of all residents. Paterson must remain a city for Patersonians, first and foremost.

Sign this petition to demand action from our city officials before it's too late to save Paterson from overdevelopment.
