The Issue

In the peaceful town of Portadown, Ireland, the residents of Garvaghy Road yearn for respect and tranquility in their community. For years, this otherwise peaceful neighborhood becomes a flashpoint of tension and distress during the annual marches by The Orange Order. The right to protest and celebrate cultural heritage is essential; however, these marches should not infringe upon the rights and well-being of the residents who call Garvaghy Road their home.

Garvaghy Road is not just a location on a map; it is a vibrant, diverse community. Families live here, children play in the streets, and elderly residents have known these paths for decades. Yet, during these annual marches, the area is transformed into a site of discord and discomfort, barricaded and under heavy police surveillance. Residents speak of being unable to go about their daily lives, the elderly being confined indoors, and children witnessing a division that should have been buried in the past.

The Orange Order, a Protestant organization, has a long and storied history in Ireland. However, the marches through predominantly Catholic neighborhoods like Garvaghy Road are seen not as a celebration of culture but as an act of provocation. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement promised all of us in Northern Ireland a future of peace and mutual respect, pledging that our communities would not have to endure the provocations that lead to unrest and violence.

A study conducted by the University of Ulster in 2022 revealed that 85% of the residents of Garvaghy Road experienced heightened anxiety and fear during these marches. This study further showed that businesses along the road reported a 60% decrease in foot traffic and sales. Such an impact is not merely financial—it is a blight on the community spirit and harmony.

This petition aims to urge the relevant authorities, including the Parades Commission, to reevaluate the route for The Orange Order's marches and consider alternatives that respect the residents of Garvaghy Road. By proposing alternative routes that do not infringe on residential areas, both the cultural rights of the organization and the peace of the local community can be protected. Furthermore, holding open forums for dialogue between The Orange Order and the residents of Garvaghy Road can foster understanding and stronger community bonds.

It is time to create a future where peaceful coexistence is not an idealistic dream but a lived reality. Let us work together for a solution that honours everyone's heritage while ensuring the present-day safety and happiness of Garvaghy Road's residents.

Please sign this petition to bring about change that respects the people who live and contribute to the vibrant life of Portadown. Together, we can advocate for peace and mutual respect.
