The Issue

Living right next to the proposed site for the Benson Gravel Pit in Allegany, NY, I am deeply worried about the future of my home, my livelihood, and my dreams. If the pit is allowed to open, it will not only destroy what I hold dear but will also adversely impact the health, environment, and community life of all residents nearby.

The opening of this gravel pit poses a significant threat to our water and air quality. Gravel pits are known to release dust and particulates into the air, contributing to respiratory issues among the local population. Moreover, the potential for groundwater contamination is high, compromising our access to safe drinking water. Our agricultural lands, vital for sustainable living and local economy, stand at risk of irreparable damage. Our horse rescue and personal horses would become exposed to significant health risks due to the air and water quality. Many of the horses come to us with poor health and mental needs. We cannot help them resolve their health issues with a gravel pit with the air, water and noise pollution that would be produced.

South Nine Mile, a serene area known for its natural beauty and productive farmland, will be at the mercy of heavy machinery and industrial operations. The introduction of noise and vibration from constant excavation activities will disturb the peace and quiet that current and future generations cherish.

Our locality's ecosystem could face disruption, affecting local wildlife and plant species that thrive here. The effects would reach far beyond the immediate area, influencing climatic conditions and potentially leading to more environmental challenges over time. There are two nesting bald eagle pairs that live on the river, a species coming back from the brink of extinction.

If this gravel pit was to be allowed to open, many of us would be forced to make life changing decisions, including closing up our dreams and moving away. This is not an option we want to have to make!

It's crucial that we act together to prevent the opening of the Benson Gravel Pit. I urge community members, environmental advocates, and concerned citizens to join me in voicing our concerns to local and county officials. We must stand united to protect our health, preserve our environment, and safeguard our community's future.

Please sign this petition to show your support and help us keep Allegany a safe, clean, and thriving place for everyone.
