The community of Fort St John has recently learned of the opening to establish a safe injection site behind Wiggles & Giggles, a renowned preschool and an elementary school, endangering the welfare of our children. While the need for safe spaces for drug users is vital, placing such a facility in close proximity to a place where young children learn and play is both irresponsible and concerning.

Wiggles & Giggles not only serves as a foundational educational space for our littlest residents, but also as a community hub where parents, teachers, and children interact daily. The chosen location for this injection site raises several red flags. Firstly, exposure to drug-related paraphernalia and activities can be mentally and emotionally disturbing for young minds, potentially impacting their development.

Statistics from similar cases show a significant rise in crime rates and loitering around these facilities, leading to an unsafe environment not just for children but for the community at large. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that neighborhoods with accessible drug paraphernalia often witness an increased risk for accidental exposure to harmful substances. Our community should not fall into this category.

Furthermore, relocating the injection site to a more suitable area away from educational institutions would preserve the sanctity and safety of our children's learning environment. We urge city officials and decision-makers to reconsider this plan and explore alternative locations that address the needs of drug users without compromising our children's safety.
