The Issue

The decision to open an ICE detention center in Nebraska is a profound concern for residents and advocates of human rights. This facility, intended for detaining undocumented immigrants, raises numerous ethical, social, and economic issues that need to be addressed before it irreparably impacts our community.

Detention centers are often associated with human rights violations, including inadequate healthcare, overcrowding, and poor living conditions. Reports of mistreatment and neglect in similar facilities nationwide highlight a disturbing trend of dehumanizing practices. According to a 2020 report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), numerous detention centers across the U.S. have failed to meet basic human rights standards, leading to widespread calls for their closure rather than expansion.

Opening such a facility in Nebraska could divert state resources from essential community services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. Local governments would be burdened with increased responsibilities and potential financial strain, causing a detrimental ripple effect throughout the state.

Additionally, the establishment of a detention center flies in the face of Nebraska’s values of compassion and hospitality. The state has been a home for many immigrant families who contribute to our economy and cultural diversity. Instead of creating spaces that foster fear and division, we should focus on systems that support integration and provide constructive solutions for immigration challenges.

Moreover, the economic impact of a detention center is questionable at best. Job creation claims are often exaggerated and do not consider the long-term economic downsides, including potential boycotts and damage to Nebraska’s reputation. Historically, reliance on immigrant detention centers has proven to be unsustainable and contrary to promoting genuine economic growth.

Nebraska deserves better than to become another link in the chain of detention centers. Let's choose humanity over incarceration and inclusivity over division. Urge your local representatives to oppose the establishment of this facility.

Sign this petition to send a powerful message to local decision-makers and defend the integrity and values of our state. Together, we can halt this plan and protect our community from the negative consequences associated with such centers. Let us stand united in advocating for a more humane and constructive approach to immigration in Nebraska.

Please consider signing this to make it known this is NOT something Nebraskans want or support.
