The Issue

A $1.2 billion computing facility built to support nuclear weapons research for Los Alamos National Laboratory could soon rise on 144 acres in Ypsilanti Township, Michigan — right next to homes, schools, and small businesses. The University of Michigan has partnered with Los Alamos, the Pentagon-linked lab responsible for designing the nation's nuclear arsenal, to build a 220,000-square-foot hub where weapons scientists would run their research.

Township leaders say they were kept in the dark. Township Supervisor Brenda Stumbo called the University's selection of the Textile Road site "a travesty of justice" and vowed, "We will fight to our very last breath," according to Brenda Stumbo, Ypsilanti Township Supervisor, as reported by 404 Media. The Township Board has already voted against supplying water to the project and just passed a six-month moratorium on new electrical infrastructure to study how a facility this size would strain the power grid and disturb residents with noise.

The University says the site will not store hazardous nuclear material or build weapons itself. But a computing center built specifically to advance the country's nuclear weapons program has no business sitting next to a residential township that never agreed to host it.

Ypsilanti residents did not get a real say before this site was picked. The University of Michigan Board of Regents and University President can still change course before construction begins.

Sign the petition to demand the University of Michigan Board of Regents cancel the Textile Road site and find a location that isn't a family neighborhood — before ground is broken on a nuclear weapons research facility nobody here asked for.
