Stop the Noise From xAI's Power Plant Keeping Southaven Families Awake
The Issue
Families in Southaven, Mississippi have gone more than a year without a quiet night. Ever since a long-dormant power plant was restarted to supply Elon Musk's xAI data centers, people living nearby describe a nonstop roar and high-pitched whine that reaches their bedrooms in the middle of the night. One mother says the sound sometimes shakes her house.
The harm goes beyond annoyance. Residents suing xAI describe headaches, migraines, anxiety, and ringing ears. That same mother says her children, all under 13, now have trouble staying awake at school. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends keeping nighttime noise outside bedrooms below 40 decibels. One homeowner has recorded readings above 60 decibels in his backyard as late as 10:15 p.m.
xAI has put up a sound wall, built an earthen berm, and planted evergreen trees. Neighbors say none of it has made a real difference. When that homeowner asked Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite for help, the mayor agreed the noise was a problem, then told him he "may want to consider selling your home," according to emails shared with CBS News.
Telling families to move is not a solution. Many have spent years building their lives in Southaven, and not everyone can afford to leave. Parents should not have to choose between their children's sleep and the homes they worked hard to buy.
Mayor Musselwhite, the Southaven Board of Aldermen, and xAI have the power to fix this. They can set and enforce nighttime noise limits, fund independent monitoring that residents can check for themselves, and commit to a firm deadline for bringing sound levels down to safe levels.
Sign the petition to tell xAI and Southaven leaders to stop the noise now, before more families lose their sleep, their health, or their homes.
