The Issue

For all of my life, I have been fortunate enough to witness the beauty of deer roaming freely in the parks of Baltimore City, Maryland specifically Druid Hill Park, since the 70s. These majestic animals have become a symbol of nature's grace amidst our urban environments. However, the city of Baltimore has announced plans to start killing these innocent creatures at night beginning in March to April 15th. at several city parks. They will be using sharpshooters that will also put a risk to the people in the community, no matter how safe they say it will be, it will not. To make things worse and to try to soften the blow to make us feel better they then say the meat from these deer will go to The Maryland Food Bank, so give it to the less fortunate. This is unacceptable and appalling, this plan threatens the very essence of our community and our connection to nature. Why, because you want to play frisbee golf, they have a right to be there, just like you!

The city authorities argue that the killing is necessary for population control and to prevent potential dangers such as deer-related accidents and damage to vegetation. However, there are more humane and effective solutions to manage the deer population without resorting to cruel methods. For instance, strategies can include implementing contraception for deer, enhancing natural habitats to distribute them more evenly, and installing wildlife crossings to minimize accidents.

It is crucial that Baltimore adopts a compassionate approach that upholds the sanctity of local wildlife. Research from conservation groups and wildlife experts across the nation has shown that non-lethal solutions can successfully maintain ecological balance while preserving animal welfare. The community must come together to protect these deer and ensure that our parks remain a refuge for all forms of life. We are taxpayers and the community should have a say in this.

Imagine our parks devoid of these gentle creatures — a reality that future generations may face if we do not act now. It is time to voice our opposition to this nighttime culling plan and demand that city officials explore alternatives that promote coexistence rather than destruction.

Please join me in speaking out against this inhumane practice. Sign this petition to urge Baltimore City to halt their plans for deer killing and commit to exploring non-lethal wildlife management solutions. Together, we can make a difference and safeguard the natural beauty of our city parks for years to come.
