The Issue

I grew up listening to my grandparents talk about the joys and challenges of their retirement years. It was a time to rest after decades of hard work, a moment to truly enjoy the fruits of their labor, surrounded by family and cherished memories. Now, as I stand in their shoes, that future feels uncertain.

The Government of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is proposing to raise the National Insurance retirement age from 65 to 67. This change threatens the very essence of retirement for so many hard-working Bahamians who have dedicated their lives to building this nation. It is an unfair burden, particularly for those in physically demanding roles who may not have the luxury of extending their working years.

Many of our workers, after paying into the National Insurance system for decades, expect to retire at 65, a promise that the current proposal seeks to break without proper consideration of its impact on our health, well-being, and financial security. This proposed increase could strip them of the dignity and security they so earnestly deserve.

According to the 2020 labor statistics, a significant number of Bahamian workers are involved in physically taxing industries such as construction and hospitality. Extending the retirement age to 67 would disproportionately affect these individuals, leading to potential health complications without them having the means to enjoy their well-deserved rest.

Rather than burdening our elderly population, alternative solutions should be sought, such as optimizing the current National Insurance scheme’s efficiency, exploring diverse investment options for the fund, and cracking down on any potential misuse of resources that may lead to deficits.

An increase in retirement age should be the last resort, not an immediate fix. It is crucial that the voices of those who stand to be most affected are listened to, heard, and acted upon.

Sign this petition to urge the Government of The Bahamas, the Minister of Labour and Public Service, and the National Insurance Board to withdraw the proposal to increase the National Insurance retirement age. Let's secure a future where retirees can enjoy financial stability and dignity once they leave the workforce. Please, add your name today to stand up for our rights, our health, and our future.
