The Issue

For decades, 9News has been one of the most trusted sources of news in Denver and across Colorado. Its investigative journalism, community-focused reporting, and editorial independence have made it a cornerstone of our local media landscape.

Now, that legacy is at risk.

Nexstar Media Group—already the largest owner of local TV stations in the country—has announced plans to acquire Tegna Inc., the parent company of 9News. If the merger is approved, Nexstar would control both 9News (NBC) and Fox31 (KDVR), two of the top-rated stations in the Denver market. Media experts warn this consolidation could lead to newsroom layoffs, programming cuts, and a loss of the distinct voice that 9News has cultivated for decades.

This isn’t just about TV. It's about democracy. Local journalism holds the powerful accountable, connects us to our communities, and helps us make informed decisions. When massive corporations consolidate control, it’s not efficiency they’re after—it’s profit. And too often, that comes at the cost of truth, transparency, and trust.

We call on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to:

  • Block this merger unless binding safeguards are put in place to protect local journalism in Colorado,
  • Preserve newsroom staffing levels and ensure 9News maintains independent editorial control,
  • And halt further consolidation of the top TV stations in a single market, especially in cities like Denver that rely on diverse sources of news.

Denver is not just another “media market.” It's our home. We deserve more than syndicated content and out-of-state decision makers. We deserve real local news from real local reporters who know our communities.

Sign this petition to protect 9News, preserve Colorado journalism, and demand that the FCC put our public interest before corporate profit.
