The Issue

For several years, my family and I have enjoyed the company of our hens and roosters. These birds have not only been a source of fresh eggs but have also become an integral part of our lives, teaching our children about responsibility and the importance of caring for animals. However, the new poultry ordinance proposed in Leland is threatening to take that away from us and many others in the community. This ordinance bans roosters and severely limits the number of hens within the city limits, effective June 1st, 2026, without any grandfathering clause for those of us who have kept these birds responsibly for years.

The sweeping nature of this ban targets a wide array of poultry, including ducks, peafowl, geese, guinea fowl, pheasants, quail, swans, turkeys, partridges, and grouse. The ordinance does not consider individual cases and the fact that many residents, like myself, have never received complaints about our well-maintained and clean poultry setups. The ordinance could severely affect local food sustainability efforts, hinder educational opportunities for children, and take away a beloved hobby that brings joy and purpose to many.

Moreover, this ban is at odds with the recent rise in urban farming and sustainability movements, where communities are encouraged to grow their food and maintain a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Across the country, cities are embracing these kinds of initiatives; shouldn’t Leland be doing the same? Rather than imposing a sweeping ban, the city should work with residents to establish guidelines that ensure animal welfare and community satisfaction.

By signing this petition, you will help urge the Leland City Council to reconsider and revise the proposed ordinance. We ask for a fair compromise that protects both the traditions and the growth opportunities that keeping poultry can provide. Let's keep Leland a community where innovative and sustainable living can flourish.

Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and to safeguard our rights to responsibly keep poultry within our home territory.
