Stop the New Gerrymandering Power Grab in North Carolina

Stop the New Gerrymandering Power Grab in North Carolina
The Issue
North Carolina lawmakers are trying to rig the next election—again.
On October 16, 2025, Republican leaders in the state legislature released a new congressional map that would redraw key districts in eastern North Carolina, including the 1st and 3rd. The proposed changes would make it harder for Democratic candidates to win competitive races—especially in the 1st District, currently represented by Democrat Don Davis, who won reelection in 2024 by less than two percentage points.
Under the new proposal, six counties that voted for Donald Trump and Republican governor candidate Mark Robinson in 2024 would be moved into the 1st District, increasing its Republican tilt. At the same time, several counties currently in the 3rd District—including Wilson County, which backed Kamala Harris and Josh Stein—would be removed or shifted. The impact is clear: fewer competitive districts and more guaranteed Republican seats.
This is the second congressional map North Carolina has proposed in just three years. In 2022, the map created a 7–7 partisan split. In 2024, Republicans won 10 out of 14 seats under a revised map. Now, GOP leaders are trying again—this time citing direct encouragement from Donald Trump, who has called on Republican-controlled states to redraw maps to help his party win Congress. North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall said the GOP “should carry out President Donald Trump’s orders” and that Trump “earned a clear mandate.”
That’s not democracy. That’s gerrymandering.
Governor Josh Stein said it best: “They’re failing voters by taking the voters’ power away to give it to the General Assembly so they can choose who our representatives are.” When politicians redraw the map every two years until they get the outcome they want, they’re not listening to voters—they’re silencing them.
We’re calling on North Carolina lawmakers to reject this gerrymandered map, restore a fair and transparent redistricting process, and commit to protecting the power of the vote. Add your name if you believe voters should choose their leaders—not the other way around.
