The Issue

The beautiful and serene mountains of Uttarkashi and the valleys of bhagirathi have been witnessing their gradual destruction in the name of development. The lush green cover and the unique ecosystem it supports not only define the identity of our region but are also crucial for maintaining ecological balance. Yet, the Uttarakhand government has repeatedly failed us by prioritizing short-term gains over sustainable development.

The planned clearing of a 8.7 km forest area in the eco-sensitive zone of Uttarkashi for constructing a bypass for the 4 Dham Yatra represents another blow to our precious natural heritage. These forests are home to diverse flora and fauna, acting as lungs for our environment, combating climate change, and supporting our local communities.

While the 4 Dham Yatra is undoubtedly significant for pilgrims, cutting down forests in protected zones is not the solution. There are sustainable alternatives that can be explored, such as improving existing infrastructure, promoting eco-tourism, and investing in alternate transport solutions that do not compromise environmental integrity.

It's crucial to raise our voices against this decision, urging the Uttarakhand government to halt this project and reconsider its approach. By protecting these forests, we protect our mountains, our environment, and our future.

Please join me in this fight to save Uttarkashi’s forests and the bhagirathi eco sensitive zone by signing this petition. Together, we can demand that the authorities listen and act responsibly, ensuring a balance between development and conservation.
