At Compassion in Politics, we believe democracy works best when everyone has a voice — but right now, millions of people are missing from the electoral register, shut out of the chance to shape the future of our country.
That’s why we recently added our name to a letter urging the government to introduce Automatic Voter Registration (AVR). This simple change would ensure that everyone who is eligible is automatically added to the electoral roll when they interact with public services — no extra paperwork, no barriers to participation.
The government has promised to extend the vote to 16- and 17-year-olds — but without AVR, many of these young people won’t actually be able to have their say. And it’s not just about young voters. AVR would also help renters, ethnic minority communities, disabled people and others who are disproportionately missing from the register today.
