We were deeply concerned by the language used by the Government in the run up to last week’s summit on border security which was attended by 40 countries.

Those seeking asylum were referred to as a “cost” and a “strain”. This kind of rhetoric reinforces harmful narratives that fuel division and even violence.

So today, Compassion in Politics joined 136 refugee and human rights organisations in signing an open letter calling on the government to stop using demonising language and choose a path rooted in unity, fairness and above all, compassion.

The letter, which was published in the Guardian today and was co-ordinated by Together with Refugees, warns:

“Now is not the time to play into the hands of those seeking to build them-and-us division between local communities and refugees.”

The hate-fuelled attacks on asylum seeker accommodation last summer showed just how dangerous inflammatory language can be. Words matter. Compassion matters.

We believe, as the letter states, that “the fair and right thing to do is create a new vision for asylum in this country” — one that is fair, compassionate and well-managed. A system that upholds international law, offers safe routes and gives people the chance to rebuild their lives in safety.

Compassion must be the foundation of our politics — not an afterthought, not a soundbite, but a core principle guiding policy and public discourse.

80% of people in the UK want a compassionate approach to refugees. It is time our leaders reflected that. We are calling on the Prime Minister and all political leaders to move away from division and put compassion at the heart of political discourse.

Let’s build a politics that unites, includes and cares. Let’s not dismiss those fleeing for their lives as a burden. Let’s be proud to act with compassion and fairness, especially towards those in the most vulnerable of circumstances.

With compassion
