Our Co-Director, Jenifer Nadel was featured in the Big Issue, discussing the impact of Trump’s second term on democratic norms and the Westminster reforms we’re calling for to safeguard UK democracy.
In the Article Jennifer says, ‘It’s a warning sign to all who believe in the rule of law and democracy, and here in the UK, our greatest threat is complacency.’ She emphasises that the next four years could ‘create new norms of behaviour’ in the UK and globally.
She continues: ‘If people are frightened to say what they think for fear of violence, that’s very bad for democracy. It creates a climate of fear… a climate of “might is right”.
Jennifer emphasises that ‘economic instability is the soil in which extremism grows,’ stressing the importance of learning from Trump’s second term. ‘It must spur us into action… if we want to protect democracy, we need to act’.
Therefore, we call for three Westminster reforms to safeguard UK democracy:
- Follow Wales’ lead and legislate against political deception.
- Hold social media companies accountable as publishers.
- Cap political donations to prevent foreign election influence.
