Stop the name change of Sawnee Mountain

Stop the name change of Sawnee Mountain
The Issue
Our beloved Sawnee Mountain doesn’t need a name change to benefit a political party. This mountain, located in Forsyth County, Georgia, carries a rich and poignant history that deserves to be preserved and respected.
Let's show Rep. David Clark that we do not agree with him using our beautiful park for his political agenda. We request that he withdraw HR 1053 and keep Sawnee Mountain as it should be.

A little history about Sawnee Mountain.
As settlers migrated to the area now known as Cumming, a local Cherokee named Sawnee played an instrumental role in helping them adjust to the native land. He was renowned throughout the region as a highly skilled carpenter and farmer. Despite his contributions, he was tragically driven away from his homeland by these very settlers and died while traveling along the Trail of Tears. The mountain range was rightfully named in his honour, serving as a tribute to his legacy and the profound impacts he had on the early settlers.
Recently, there have been movements to change the name of Sawnee Mountain. These proposals, purportedly motivated by political agendas, threaten to erase a significant part of our history. It's crucial to remember the lessons of the past, not erase them. The name Sawnee Mountain is not just a label; it represents the heritage of the Cherokee people and the injustices they suffered. Changing the name would further disrespect and marginalize the memory of a people who have already endured so much.
Historically, the name Sawnee has been associated with unity and cooperation, representing a time when cultures intertwined. Removing this name undermines these values and diminishes the collective memory of a significant Cherokee figure who symbolized resilience and community.
By keeping the name Sawnee Mountain, we honour a legacy and ensure that future generations remember the true narrative of our land and its people.
Please join me in preserving history and paying homage to the contributions and sacrifices of the Cherokee people. Sign this petition to prevent the renaming of Sawnee Mountain to protect its historical significance and ensure that Sawnee's story continues to inspire and educate future generations.
