The Issue

The corner of Market and Beard Avenue in Shawnee, Oklahoma is more than just an intersection to me—it's the heart of my home and community. Our neighborhood is a peaceful enclave where families know each other, local wildlife thrives, and the sense of community is palpable. It's a place where the sounds of children playing and birds chirping fill the air, and this tranquility is priceless to those of us who live here.

However, the proposed development of multifamily homes threatens to disrupt the balance and serenity we've nurtured for so long. The increase in population density would lead to significant traffic congestion on roads that are already strained. Our local infrastructure, which includes drainage systems and utility services, is not equipped to handle the sudden surge in demand. The safety of our children and the quality of our daily lives are at risk.

According to the Urban Institute, rapid development in low-density residential areas can lead to increased road accidents and higher maintenance costs for public services due to unanticipated infrastructural stress. This is a risk we should not have to face.

We propose that the city council reassess the potential impacts of this development, focusing on adaptive infrastructure plans before considering any large-scale projects. Local governments have shown success in passing policies that focus on sustainable growth, like prioritizing single-family zoning or enhancing green spaces that accommodate community growth without sacrificing quality of life.

We urge the city planners and council members to listen to our concerns and explore alternative solutions that respect the character and limitations of our beloved community. Preserving the unique attributes of Shawnee ensures that future generations can enjoy and thrive in this tranquil setting, just as we have.

Please join me in protecting our neighborhood by signing this petition and advocating for thoughtful, sustainable urban planning that preserves what makes Shawnee special. Together, we can make our voices heard and safeguard the home we cherish so dearly.
