Stop the Microbrewery and Event Center in Kamas Valley, UT
The Issue
On October 6, 2022, the Planning Commission for Eastern Summit County, UT heard the petition from Dendric Estates Cidery, also referred to as Coyle Orchards, for the conditional use of 20 acres that are zoned for agriculture to instead be allowed to be used for a Microbrewery, Distillery, and Guest Ranch, intended to attract visitors or patrons on a daily basis.
What was originally presented to local residents as an orchard for cider with a farm-to-table small plate tasting room is actually requesting permission to host events like weddings and conferences with up to 150 guests, as well as applying for a restaurant and bar license. Their goals are not only to distill hard cider, but to also offer that and other spirits for consumption at these events.
In a community with no regular overnight police force, no lighting on State Road 32, where the Distillery will be, and the only option for patrons who've been served alcohol will be to drive themselves through SR-248 or Browns Canyon Road to get back to the nearest lodging in Park City. This puts us all at risk- including those attending these events and drinking- when buzzed or drunk drivers hit our local highways, right in front of our homes, in the dark.
The Kamas Valley is a small, agricultural community with less than 7,000 residents per the 2020 census. This community, full of farmers and lovers of the farm environment, may become a rustic extension of the Park City party scene if neighbors do not come together to fight this clear violation of local zoning laws. There is also the concern of the water and waste that will come from a commercial distillery, when many residents already do not have enough water for their own agricultural use.
Join us to keep the Kamas Valley rural and true to the needs of small farms and families, and to keep events and commercial activities in the parts of Summit County that are already zoned that way!
