Stop the Mass Slaughter of Rescue Dogs in Gimje, South Korea
The Issue
We adopted a 2 year old pit bull named Nilly this past January. Nilly was rescued from an illegal dog meat farm in Gimje, South Korea by a rescue organization called ADOGS which is made up of volunteers who love and care about dogs and their well-being.
We are so thankful Nilly has been rescued and is safe at home with us; there are many other dogs remaining who are facing a dire circumstance.

I am petitioning on behalf of the ADOGS rescue organization.
They desperately plead for your help and action.
Please join them in their efforts to stop the euthanasia of dogs who were rescued from an illegal dog meat farm.
At the end of July 2022, ADOGS raided an illegal dog meat farm that held 102 dogs located in Gimje City. The conditions they witnessed first-hand were truly deplorable. Countless dogs were confined to small metal cages where they could barely turn around and were fed food wastes hanging from metal cages until the day they were to be slaughtered. They had to save these dogs.
On the day of the rescue, they were already hearing talk from Gimje city to euthanize these 102 very large dogs because they had nowhere else to go. However, they couldn't stand by and let the city snuff out the lives of these innocent dogs who had never even been out of their cages. After lengthy negotiations with the city of Gimje, they secured a promise that the city would rent the property that had been the illegal dog farm to them, for about a year. The horrific dog slaughterhouse was cleaned up and renamed the “ADOGS Village"; during the past year, ADOGS and countless volunteers have been maintaining and caring for these dogs.
They gave them names one by one, gave vaccinations, neutered/spayed, took them out for walks, and took care of them with dedication. Some dogs crossed the rainbow bridge due to poor health, and a few dogs met their forever families in Korea and abroad. Currently, 70 dogs are waiting for their families in the ADOGS Village.
ADOGS knew better than anyone that it would be difficult for all the large dogs to be adopted within a year. So, they planned to build a new shelter to care for these dogs with the precious donations contributed by many people. These donations allowed them to purchase a suitable piece of land that was legally permitted and confirmed by Gimje City that there won’t be any issue for the type of use to build a shelter to relocate these rescues.
However, was it the influence of the Gimje City Counselor who uttered, “I don't like dogs. Why is animal welfare even necessary”? After signing a contract, the construction of the new shelter was postponed indefinitely as the City of Gimje took on a passive attitude toward construction permitting due to complaints from the local residents.
In the meantime, on Friday, July 21, 2023 at 5:25 PM KST, ADOGS received a notice from Gimje City’s Livestock Development and Animal Protection Department.
“Remove your dogs by Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the position of Gimje City is unwavering, and if you do not remove the dogs by the 25th, all 70 dogs will be euthanized."
What Gimje City is trying to do is a mass slaughter.
These innocent dogs who were being killed without a name, now have names. These dogs who used to be gripped with fear thinking they would die if they came out of their metal cage are now enjoying their walks. Even if they can't be adopted until the day they cross the rainbow bridge, ADOGS team is determined to be their family for the rest of their lives. Please help ADOGS to continue to care for these innocent dogs.

Please petition Gimje City:
1. To stop the euthanasia of these dogs
2. If the extension of the use of the current site is not possible, Gimje City must search for another place where the dogs can be relocated
3. To actively cooperate and to permit construction of a new ADOGS shelter to begin as soon as possible
Please petition the South Korean Government:
1. To establish an entity dedicated to ensuring animal welfare with severe consequences for violations
2. To mandate that cities support ongoing rescue efforts and aid in the care of rescued dogs
3. Severe punishment including prison time for those running illegal dog meat farms, puppy mills, animal neglect and abuse
4. To make consumption of dog meat illegal
Please help so that so many people’s kind donations and contributions to build the new shelter to save these dogs will not go to waste. Please give our rescue dogs a chance to live their lives.
