Stop the mass killing of stray animals in Morocco

The Issue

In Morocco, as preparations for the 2026 FIFA Football/Soccer Tournament unfold, a distressing strategy has emerged: the mass killing of stray animals. As someone deeply moved by this issue, I am compelled to raise my voice against an approach that sacrifices innocent lives for the sake of profit from ticket sales and sports tourism. We must halt this inhumane practice and adopt more compassionate strategies that align with high standards of animal welfare.

The problem isn't the presence of stray animals but rather how we choose to manage the situation. Instead of resorting to mass killings, Morocco has the opportunity to lead by example, showing the world how to address this issue humanely and effectively. Implementing widespread spay and neuter programs could significantly reduce the population of stray animals over time. These programs not only control the population but also prevent the spread of diseases, ensuring public safety and healthier environments for both humans and animals.

Additionally, focusing on vaccination programs can keep the streets safe by minimizing the risk of diseases. A compassionate and forward-thinking approach is crucial—not just ethically, but to uphold Morocco's image on an international stage during such a significant event as the FIFA Tournament. By redirecting efforts towards humane alternatives, Morocco has the chance to shine as a progressive and responsible host nation.

Statistics from various successful animal management programs worldwide showcase the effectiveness of spay and neuter initiatives along with vaccination drives in controlling stray animal populations. These initiatives not only preserve life but also promote a culture of kindness and compassion—a universal value cherished across cultures.

The time to act is now. We must urge the Moroccan authorities to reconsider their approach and commit to humane methods of managing stray animals. Your signature can help make this change a reality. Please join me by signing this petition to demand action and demonstrate our collective support for compassionate animal welfare practices in Morocco.

We must also urge FIFA to issue penalties if not disqualification to host nations who fail to adopt a kind, compassionate and humane management of stray animals in their host countries ahead of such sporting events. This has happened too many times in host nations and FIFA must not allow it. FIFA should be setting a forward thinking example and do whatever is necessary to aid nation's in achieving this. The profits made by hosting nations from such sporting events is unprecedented, and countries who carry out such barbaric atrocities should not be financially rewarded so handsomely. FIFA has an ethical department and perhaps should encourage some profits to be channeled into introducing kind and compassionate initiatives to humanely manage over population of stray animals in hosting nationas, such as spay and neutering aswell as vaccination programs to ensure public safety whilst upholding the principle of practicing high animal welfare standards always.
