Weasley & Carter’s Markham Pet Prohibition Appeal

IF YOU LOVE CATS, THIS IS A MUST-READ!

My name is Carter, and I’m 14 years old just like my friend Weasley, the chunky, chilled-out elderly neighborhood cat who’s been greeting me on my walk home from school for years. Every day around 3:30, Weasley lies in a driveway, meowing when he sees me coming. He doesn’t beg for treats or cause any trouble. All he wants is some sunshine, a few head scratches, and someone to share the moment with. 

But now, due to a new bylaw in the City of Markham, outdoor cats like Weasley are prohibited from leaving their owner’s property—even if they’ve done so peacefully for over a decade. While we understand the importance of protecting wildlife and safety, this one-size-fits-all rule is taking away something beautiful and harmless from our community. 

We’re asking the City of Markham to reconsider this bylaw—or at least create exemptions for calm, well-socialized, elderly cats like Weasley who pose no risk. We propose reasonable alternatives, such as mandatory ID tags, GPS collars, or property-line guidelines that allow cats to stay close to home without full confinement. We firmly belief a compromise can be found if we act now.

We’re not just fighting for Weasley—we’re standing up for peaceful animal companionship, neighborhood joy, and the simple daily routines that brighten people’s lives.
