Stop the Mandatory Repetition of "Taking Care Of Business" in Albertsons and Vons

The Issue

I have been working at Albertsons for the past 20 years. Every day, at 9 am and 3 pm, without fail, we hear the song "Taking Care of Business". While this may sound insignificant to outsiders, this repetition becomes very annoying for those of us who have to hear it daily- it definitely has a negative impact on our work morale. A similar sentiment is echoed by my colleagues at Vons - another supermarket chain owned by the same parent company.

Repetition of sounds in workplaces can be distracting to employees and could decrease productivity. According to a study by Oxford Economics, noise and distractions are a major hindrance for employees trying to focus on their work. Forced repetition, especially of something that one does not prefer, could potentially lead to job dissatisfaction or even health issues related to stress (Oxford Economics and Plantronics, 2019).

We understand that company culture and employee motivation can be enhanced with a catchy tune and a good beat. However, we respectfully request that our employers consider varying the tracklist and refraining from repetitively playing the same song at the same times every day. A diverse selection of music could cater to a wider range of employees' tastes and may even improve our collective mood and productivity.

It's about taking care of the business – ours, and that of our valued customers. And to do that, we need a conducive work environment. Please, sign this petition to urge corporate leadership at Albertsons and Vons to stop playing "Taking Care of Business" at 9 am and 3 pm daily. Express your support for employee well-being and an uplifting work atmosphere.
