Stop the Livestock Scramble at the Ashtabula County Fair in Ohio

Stop the Livestock Scramble at the Ashtabula County Fair in Ohio
The Issue
For the first time in its history, the Ashtabula County Fair will be holding a Livestock Scramble. Images and clips can be graphic; none will be shown here but an online search will generate results if you are curious. Children are placed in an arena with (we are told) calves, chickens, piglets, and lambs to chase, tackle, grab, and ultimately "catch" the animal as a prize. These are all "prey" animals; being chased, cornered, tackled and fallen upon creates immense stress and fear. Although officials tell us that the youngsters will be given brief "handling" rules and instructions, the potential for injury is high. Of equal..but maybe greater concern ?? is the message the Scramble sends to children; both those participating, and those watching from the audience.
The message sent to these youngsters is deeply concerning. This event teaches a complete and utter lack of concern, compassion or empathy for these animals. Chasing and capturing a frightened, vulnerable animal should not be held up to these youngsters as an example of entertainment.
Occasionally, an opinion voiced in favor of these events is that these animals are just "livestock". However, they deserve the same kindness and humane treatment as do our domesticated "pets". (One would NEVER condone doing this to puppies, kittens, etc.)
Please sign asap - we are running out of time. The event is Wednesday, August 6th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds. 127 N Elm St., Jefferson, OH 44047.
Help us be a voice for these animals! Please sign, then send an email to the following contacts or place a POLITE call or text to the officials in charge.
PLEASE BE KIND !! We are all on this Earth together.
