Stop the live streaming of Nidal Hasan's execution
The issue
I am deeply opposed to both capital punishment and the glorification of violence, whether it is broadcasted on television, plastered across the internet, or sensationalized in the news. So I am creating this petition calling on Mr. Trump to stop the live streaming of Nidal Hasan’s execution.
Broadcasting executions is a barbaric practice that harkens back to a time when public executions were a form of entertainment. This is not the image that America (or any country) should project to the world. It stands contrary to the principles of dignity and respect for human life that the US claims to represent. Respecting the dignity and the rights of all, including convicted criminals is supposedly a hall mark of American society.
Rather it resembles the tactics of ISIS who streamed beheadings live to worldwide horror and digust.
Executing Nidal Hasan makes him a martyr, contributing to the radicalization of extremists. Live streaming this barbaric act only amplifies that in the minds of such people.
Live streaming of an execution sends the wrong message to our children and future generations. What lesson do we impart when violent judicial consequences are turned into a media event? This is not just about one individual’s execution; this is about the precedents we set as a society.
By denying this broadcast, we send a powerful message: that violence, no matter how justified, should not be entertainment. We stand for a society that is mature in its principles and conscientious about the stories we tell to our youth.
Please join me in urging Mr. Trump to halt the live stream of Nidal Hasan’s execution. We must uphold the values of respect and humanity in all circumstances. Sign this petition to express your stance against the public display of executions and in support of a more dignified and respectful handling of justice.
