Last night, at the regularly scheduled Student Government meeting, students were informed by an Assistant Vice President involved in these discussions that there are currently no plan for where OELT and the art departments will go in the main campus buildings. They assured students that they would find space for storage and classes and that renovations would be done where necessary. However, multiple students brought up concerns about the fact that clubs and organizations have already had troubles with storage and that classrooms would need a lot of renovation and work before they would be suitable for students. The data used to come up with utilization rates of our fascilities only considers usage from Monday - Friday 8 AM -5 PM, which means that many club meeting times, classes, and other events were not used in their data about our poor utilization. Questions about accessibility with our elevators being down for extended periods of time were met with little urgency. This issue is not as simple as moving a couple of departments as this will have a ripple affect for all students attending VTSU Lyndon due to several classrooms in the main building needing to be blocked out just for the necessary equipment for art classes alone. Multiple times students were told that we had access to information we did not ever receive or that it was in the email (pictured here) students had received earlier that day.
What we saw yesterday was an overwhelming amount of voices from students, staff, faculty, and even other campuses saying that leasing Harvey Academic Center is unacceptable, and students will NOT sit by and let this happen to the campus we all love. Thank you for everyone's efforts yesterday, and for the effort that is sure to come to protect HAC from this decision.
