The Issue

Ely Blvd has always been a crucial artery in our community, and recent changes to reduce traffic lanes are impacting our everyday lives. As someone who has lived here for years, I have witnessed how essential the four lanes have been in both directions, particularly from Frates Rd to East Washington St. Now, the reduction in lanes will force a bottleneck, pushing traffic into our quiet residential streets, which weren't designed to handle such volumes.

Just the other day, I watched as a line of buses, three deep, struggled to pick up students as cars backed up down the road. The congestion is not just inconvenient; it poses a real safety issue for our children and neighbors. The buses, which are critical for student transport, no longer have the easy, fluid access they once did. Moreover, without two lanes on each side, emergency vehicles may find it difficult to navigate through as well, potentially delaying vital services.

The community’s infrastructure cannot withstand this 'lane diet.' The increased traffic on side streets will only contribute to higher wear and tear and pose additional hazards to residents. It is crucial to restore the lanes to ensure the smooth and safe operation of our local traffic.

We urge the Petaluma City Council to reconsider their approach to urban planning and keep Ely Blvd to its original two lanes on each side. Alternatives such as better synchronized traffic lights, designated bus lanes, or improving public transport infrastructures should be considered to manage traffic without sacrificing our neighborhood's tranquility and safety.

Please join me and sign this petition to leave the original lane configuration on Ely Blvd. Together, we can make our voices heard and work towards a solution that benefits the entire community.

“I am the councilmember for district 2 which is near this section of road that I have traveled daily. The road diet plan for Ely south and Caulfield is posted on the city website: https://cityofpetaluma.org/caulfield-ely/ The slide presentation contains the reasoning and diagrams of the road diet: https://cityofpetaluma.primegov.com/viewer/preview?id=0&type=8&uid=12a050ba-a0ff-4605-9362-ac7bbf6f6028 I live near Sonoma Mtn. Pkwy. and Washington and taught at CGHS for 16 years traveling there and back in car and on bike and road worthy electric scooter so have lots of experience and had many close calls as a driver and as a bike rider. Getting out of my street onto SMP at 8:10 to 8:25 can be difficult due to the large number of cars going to CGHS. Cars and busses arriving at CGHS can be difficult to navigate. Students, parents with younger children walking across Ely at Caulfield will be safer than the current design which is too wide a crosswalk. I have raised these concerns as well as location of park cars that could block view of bikers with the traffic engineers and they have solutions. The 4 lanes are being reduced to 3 lanes, not 2 lanes with the middle lane a turn lane for both directions. The Caulfield roundabout will increase traffic flow and be safer for pedestrians. The bus stops and car entrance/exits at CGHS will be worked on by the engineers to improve flow at the critical drop off and pickup times. The two lanes to one lane heading South on Ely from Washington will have a long enough stretch to allow for convergence. Traffic volumes have been measured so that the new design should work by the numbers/data. If you have concerns about a particular pinch point, blockage of line of sight, flow at particular intersections, entries and exits (esp. at CGHS), the engineers are still listening and can be contacted through the website page above. Please give this new design a chance.”
