STOP "The Landings" development on St. George Island
The Issue
PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION IN SUPPORT OF JOELLEN PEARMAN'S LETTER TO THE COMMISSIONERS OPPOSING THE AMENDMENT OF THE OVERLAY ORDINANCE.
WE STAND UNITED IN OPPOSITION. OUR COMMISSIONERS APPEAR TO BE PRIORITIZING UNNEEDED, DETRIMENTAL, COMMERCIAL EXPANSION -- IN SUPPORT OF NON-LOCAL DEVELOPERS -- OVER THEIR CONSTITUENT'S HOMES, ENVIRONMENT, LIVELIHOODS AND FUTURE. THIS PROJECT IS EXACTLY WHAT GENERATIONS OF LOCALS HAVE FOUGHT & SACRIFICED TO PREVENT, AND WE DESERVE TO UNDERSTAND YOUR DECISIONS.
Dear Commissioners,
I'm not sure I understand the motive, amending the ordinance for the St. George Island Corridor Overlay District on St. George Island. The residents have been very outspoken about the proposed marina, dry stack storage, and multi family housing project on the St. George Island entrance of the bridge. Since none of you live over here, let me fill you in on a few facts.
First, the area that this project is intended for is already a traffic nightmare. With only one grocery store and one gas station on the island, and the opening of the Sand Bar, and the constant deliveries with semi-trucks in that area create a lot of congestion as it is. The construction that will take place with this project, along with the finished project, will only make it worse. I won't even get into the evacuation issues, with there being only one way on, and one way off of the island.
Second. Our landfill is less than a year from being full. Now, you will be allowing more construction, and a significant amount of more people. This will inevitably generate more trash. I've been told that we can't afford to have the trash on the bridge picked up more than twice a month, even during peak season. It's an embarrassment to the island, and definitely not good for tourism or the environment. When it's not picked up, it blows into the bay.
Third. You may say it will generate jobs. But not for people here. There's no affordable housing for the workers to live in. You're putting the cart before the horse. Create some affordable housing and you'll have a workforce. These multi-family houses are not going to be even close to affordable for the average citizen of Franklin County.
Fourth. Our firefighters are hard working volunteers, and the housing on this island has multiplied quickly. This will only add to the stress they are already under. The lack of fire hydrants has been brought up, but no progress has been made. They may be getting a new truck with the 3.3 million the county is receiving, but what good is the truck if the hydrant it 2 blocks away?
Fifth. In order for a marina to be operational, dredging will have to take place. Haven't we spent millions to restore our oysters? Why would you allow this?
Nothing about this project benefits the residents of St. George Island, and we have voiced our concerns before and overwhelmingly stated that we were not in favor of this. Evidently our voices weren't heard then and I doubt they will be now. I believe your minds are made up, hence the huge amount of clearing that has taken place on that parcel of land. We voted for you, (Ricky Jones) because we thought you would have our best interests at heart when it came to making decisions about this island. Unfortunately, we were wrong.
Yes, the people that pay a tremendous amount of money to come here, and residents alike would love to have a SAFE public boat ramp on the island, but there has been no concern about repairing the death trap that is available to them now . And be sure to mention that the sewage treatment plant that they will be required to have for this project, will be in the neighborhood off of W. Bay Shore Dr.. Nice.
There are so many issues to be discussed with this . So, if it's not for the benefit of the people, I guess, once again, just follow the money. We are eleventh out of 62 counties in Florida for revenue received. We have a population of just over 12,000 people. If there is a need for more money, there is are a lot of misused funds somewhere. Just sayin'.
To be fair, please inform us, the residents, of St. George Island, how this benefits us. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Jo Ellen Pearman, St. George Island.
