Thanks to your support, we've hit a major milestone - and we’re ready to take this campaign to the next step.

We’ll be submitting a formal motion at the upcoming LUSU AGM (Annual General Meeting).

We can’t “ban” the society outright.

That’s not how the system works - and honestly, we’re not trying to silence anyone. But we can demand accountability.

The Freedom of Speech (Higher Education) Act 2023 protects lawful free expression in universities, but it does not require student unions to affiliate with or fund groups whose conduct violates equality, anti-harassment, or inclusion policies.

This motion aims to hold the society to the same basic standards expected of every student group. If passed, LUSU would refuse to affiliate with the Reform UK Society unless they can show they’re willing to change - starting with their behaviour.

Why we’re doing this

The society’s leadership has:

  • Removed posters opposing their views.
  • Posted discriminatory content in group chats and on public social media.
  • Made multiple students feel unsafe or unwelcome, resulting in reports to the university.

We've been very clear that this isn’t about politics. It’s about conduct - whether a society is living up to LUSU’s values and the University’s Dignity in Student Life principles - which include non-discrimination, respect, and inclusion.

What the motion calls for

If passed, the Students' Union will:

  • Refuse affiliation to the Reform UK Society until it demonstrates compliance with student union policies.
  • Require the group to submit an action plan addressing its conduct.
Introduce mandatory training on non-harassment and equality for its leaders.
  • Set clearer rules for all political societies to promote respectful engagement and zero tolerance for hate.

What happens next?
We’ll be sharing more details soon about when and how the motion will be voted on.
