First, Animal Care Services impounded Ol’ Red. Then, they amputated his leg. Then, they killed him.
San Antonio taxpayer dollars spent on treating an injured dog, only to turn around and kill him for “space?”
Ol’ Red was picked up by ACS animal control and the officer who handled Red reported that a “mild bite” occurred. Red was in a lot of pain but because of the bite, was placed into quarantine. It’s unclear if he was seen by a vet during his time in quarantine but it’s unlikely. We will have to request his records to know for sure.
Once red was discharged from quarantine, he was moved to the medical clinic where it was noted that he had a suspected fracture in his right front leg. The ACS medical clinic decided to amputate Red’s leg, a major surgery. Red was noted to be social towards staff and allowed staff to interact with him including petting him (making physical contact with him) and walking him on leash.
The vet notes stated, “patient is friendly, just painful.”
Yesterday, on January 6th, Ol’ Red was scheduled to be killed by ACS, under the direction of ACS Director Shannon Sims. Then, Ol’ Red was killed by ACS staff.
Putting a dog through major surgery only to kill him is a disgrace and a complete disregard for his life.
Please email San Antonio city government and demand that ACS director Shannon Sims be replaced by someone who shows compassion for these animals.
