Neighbors-
We won the first step in the fight to keep our neighborhood quiet and peaceful. The City Planning Commission denied The Josephine's request for an ordinance change that would allow a Live Music Venue for over 1300 people until 4am.
On March 2nd, we had a great neighbor's only meeting, where we discussed our options. Of the 19 neighbors present, all 19 wanted to move forward by asking The Josephine to withdraw their proposal. On March 9th, we had over 60 neighbors show up to The Josephine 2nd NPP meeting. The large turnout was due to the outreach of our neighbors. The vast majority were strongly opposed (only 2 were in favor) and wanted to see the existing operations better controlled (parking, people, trash, etc). The Josephine Management and Sherman Consultants listened, took notes, and it seemed that although they were unwilling to withdraw their request for an ordinance change, they might offer provisos to the change of 750 ppl and hours to 12am.
Throughout the meeting, management continued to try to placate us with promises that the venue would only be for "cultural" events and live performances appropriate to the neighborhood; however, there were a number of neighbors present - some from the music industry - who were able to ask hard hitting questions that made it clear: The Josephine wants to host standing room only live music events.
On Tuesday March 10th, The Josephine came with a proposal to include provisos that would limit the ticket sales to 850 people and hours of 10:45pm on weeknights and 1am on weekends. They also were forced to admit, after repeated questioning by the commission, that they did intend to hold standing room only live music events (and not just philharmonic concerts and school plays). It ended with a denial by the City Planning Commission. One member of the Commission tried to move a vote on the approval for the terms proposed by Brennan's. She could not get a second to move the motion forward.
CPC's decision will be taken up by the City Council and they will have the final say. The date will be shared here.
We will hold another in person neighbor's only meeting next Monday March 16th @ 6pm. Location TBD! If you would like to be included, please email toijeancarter@gmail.com
