Help Stop the UK Family Farm Tax - Protect Our Rural Heritage & Communities (Help Stop the UK Family Farm Tax - Protect Our Rural Heritage & Communities)

Please sign petition, as we are deeply concerned about the future of family farming in the UK and call on the government to reconsider its proposed inheritance tax changes as outlined in the October Budget. This petition comes from a place of fear and uncertainty shared by countless family farmers across the nation, who worry that this new tax policy will put their farms and livelihoods at risk.

We understand the challenges farmers face every day. For generations, farms have been the backbone of rural communities, producing the food that sustains our nation. But the government’s new policy could force many to sell the land they've worked so hard to protect and pass down to future generations.

The Threat to Family Farms
The Labour Party's proposed inheritance tax is targeting farmland valued over £1 million and could devastate family farms across the country. Currently, the average UK farm is valued at £2.2 million, with many family farms exceeding £1.5 million in value. For these farmers, the tax would pose a significant financial burden, making it impossible for them to pass down their farms to their children. For decades, Agricultural Property Relief (APR) has allowed family farms to transfer without tax, ensuring that they remain within families. But this proposed change threatens to undo that tradition, forcing many families to sell their farms just to pay the impossible tax set by Keir Starmer and the Labour Government.

Farmers already face difficult economic realities: slim profit margins, rising costs for fuel, feed, and fertilizer, and pressures from global supermarket chains. The last thing they need is a new tax that further undermines their ability to sustain family businesses. Many UK farmers are barely getting by, and now they face the possibility of losing the land that has been in families for generations.

A Broader Issue for Rural Communities
Family farming isn't just a business, it's a way of life. These farms preserve our rural landscapes, support local economies, and provide food security for the entire nation. This tax will not only affect farmers; it will hurt entire rural communities that depend on these farms for jobs, services, and local economies. If farms are sold off to large corporations, we risk losing control of our food production and the unique character of rural areas in Britain, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

While some argue that taxing the wealthiest landowners is fair, this policy unfairly targets family farmers who have worked for generations to maintain their land. Instead of taxing working farms, we should look to alternatives, like taxing land value increases driven by planning permissions or targeting larger corporations that profit from squeezing farmers while paying minimal taxes.

Why This Matters
The proposed inheritance tax is part of a larger pattern of policies that make it increasingly difficult for family farmers to survive. UK farmers have long faced challenges, from Brexit-related disruptions to the rising costs of production and unpredictable weather due to climate change. The Labour government’s plan will add yet another layer of pressure, potentially wiping out thousands of family farms over the coming decades.

The unintended consequence of tax breaks given to large landowners has inflated land prices, effectively shutting out smaller, genuine farmers. If these policies continue, it will be global corporations, not family farmers, who control our land and food production.

Our Call to Action
We are calling on the government and policymakers to:

Remove the Inheritance Tax on Family Farms: This tax threatens the continuity of family farms and unfairly burdens the next generation of farmers.

Implement Fair Policies That Support Farmers:

Recognize the unique role family farms play in the UK and create supportive policies that strengthen, not weaken, our ability to sustain our communities.

Protect UK Food Standards and Local Agriculture:

Ensure that family farms are shielded from unfair competition and have access to the resources they need to thrive.

Support Farmers Facing Climate and Economic Challenges:

Introduce programs to help farmers adapt to climate change, manage rising production costs, and maintain a sustainable workforce.
