The Issue

In our peaceful community of Surprize Arizona, a terrifying incident profoundly impacted my family. A 4-year-old  was playing in the yard when a coyote suddenly attacked her. In those terrifying moments, the mom fought off the coyote with no hesitation to protect her child. While we can all agree that the safety of our children is paramount, the subsequent actions taken by the city were distressing and disproportionate.

In response to the attack, the city authorities ordered an immediate culling of all coyotes in the area. This involved capturing and killing every coyote found, later dissecting them for rabies testing. Not only is this approach inhumane, but it's also scientifically ineffective and could exacerbate the problem.  https://www.fox10tv.com/2026/09/09/no-hesitation-mother-fights-off-coyote-that-began-attacking-her-4-year-old-daughter/

Research indicates that indiscriminate culling disrupts the natural ecological balance. When adult coyotes are removed, it often leads to an increase in the population of younger, inexperienced coyotes that can breed more rapidly, thereby increasing rather than decreasing their numbers. This counterproductive method fails to address the root of the issue and detracts from meaningful, humane solutions.

Instead of resorting to culling, we propose a community-based approach centered around non-lethal methods and education. By implementing strategies like habitat modification, aversive conditioning, and public education programs on coexistence, we can effectively reduce human-wildlife conflicts while respecting wildlife.

Encouragingly, many communities across the nation have successfully implemented these humane coexistence strategies, leading to decreased coyote-human conflicts without harming local wildlife. It is time for Surprise to join the ranks of these progressive cities, showing that we value life - both human and animal.

We urge city officials to halt the coyote culling and adopt a more humane, scientifically-backed management plan. Let us protect our children and our wildlife responsibly and compassionately.
