Stop the incorporation of Fort Washington, Maryland

Stop the incorporation of Fort Washington, Maryland

The Issue

To all Prince George’s County Officials, State Representatives, and Community Stakeholders,

Our community has been a part of the vibrant and diverse landscape of Prince George’s County for many years. The thought of Fort Washington transitioning into a municipality brings me great concern and prompt me to speak out.

Incorporation could lead to unnecessary governmental layers, which may result in an increase in bureaucratic processes and inefficiencies. Fort Washington already enjoys the benefits of being part of Prince George’s County, which is renowned for its services and community support. Adding an additional government structure could complicate the allocation of resources and undermine the existing efficiency.

Furthermore, incorporation could have significant tax implications for all of us. The formation of a new government would likely lead to increased taxes to support municipal governance functions, something our residents might not be prepared for. When we factor in escalating cost of living and economic uncertainties, this financial burden could strain family budgets and negatively impact our quality of life.

It's essential to consider that Fort Washington's incorporation could lead to changes in zoning laws, potentially affecting residential and commercial properties. This might lead to unintended consequences that could alter the character of our community. Our green spaces, housing developments, and local businesses are intricately woven into our community fabric, and any risk of adverse impact must be thoroughly assessed before taking drastic steps.

Our education system is another crucial consideration. Aligning Fort Washington as a standalone entity might disrupt the current educational framework, potentially affecting funding and resources allocated to schools. We must ensure the uninterrupted educational experience for our children.

Finally, the strength of Fort Washington lies in its unity and its identity within Prince George’s County. The establishment of a municipality risks division rather than cohesion.

For these reasons, I, along with fellow residents, property owners, and supporters, respectfully urge you to reconsider any plans for incorporation and keep Fort Washington whole and thriving.

Please stand with us to maintain the integrity and future of our beloved community. Sign this petition to oppose the incorporation of Fort Washington and to safeguard our community’s interests.
