Stop the Import of Old and Polluting Cars into Senegal

Stop the Import of Old and Polluting Cars into Senegal
Le problème
Enough is enough. Senegal deserves clean air, safe roads, and a future that prioritizes the well-being of its people and environment.
We, the undersigned, are calling on the Government of Senegal to urgently reconsider and cancel the policy that allows the importation of vehicles over ten years old into our country.
Why this matters:
• Public health is at risk. Dakar and other urban areas are already suffocating under dangerous levels of pollution. The vast majority of these emissions come from outdated, poorly maintained vehicles.
• Climate change is real. Senegal has made international commitments toward sustainability, yet our current vehicle import policy is in direct contradiction with those goals.
• A double standard. While new visa policies are introduced to control who enters the country, we continue to let in toxic cars that endanger the lives of the very citizens we’re supposed to protect.
• Our youth deserve better. We need to invest in public transport, clean mobility, and green infrastructure — not make our streets dumping grounds for Europe’s discarded vehicles.
This is a call for vision. Let’s build a Senegal that’s cleaner, safer, and forward-looking — one decision at a time.
We urge the government to:
• Immediately cancel the policy allowing the import of cars older than 5 years
• Create a clear roadmap for green mobility
• Invest in sustainable public transportation and environmental justice
Senegal can and must do better. Let’s act now.
