The Issue

Students and Parents of children within the SBCISD, we wish to inform you about the new bill that will be implemented throughout schools in Texas.

The Texas House Bill 1481, restricts students from using any communication devices like cell phones, smartwatches, and tablets during the school day and on school grounds.

This is a violation of our freedoms and rights, especially our 1st amendment right. Our cellular devices allow us to express ourselves and freely communicate.

We find it absurd that the SBCISD remains a follower instead of defending & protecting the rights of students.

The use of cellular devices might be distracting, yes, but if we were to use the same logic as our administrators then it’s to say the use of Chromebooks would be a distraction as well.

If the SBCISD should fully adopt the new bill then it should carry through with its “beliefs of proper education” to the fullest. Let our administrators also not be allowed communication devices, take their right to freedom of speech & expression just as they do ours.

Parents, as school shooting rates are quickly on the rise in this day and age, you should be aware that many tragedies have occurred due to the negligence of schools and our government as well as not contacting emergency services quickly enough.

One phone call made by a student could save hundreds of lives during a school shooting. The SBCISD needs to acknowledge this fact and not blindly become a follower among other districts within Texas.

We plead with you to apply critical thinking skills and not allow this bill to be implemented in schools. Though the bill might seem like nothing to some, it is one of the early steps towards the further violation of the rights of students and parents of any children within the SBCISD.
