Stop the Imminent Closure of UEA Counselling Department

The University of East Anglia (UEA) has recently announced that it will be closing its Counselling Department (Centre for Counselling Studies) this year, and therefore all the courses the department currently offers will cease to exist at the end of this academic year. The UEA has provided a world class Person-Centred Training in counselling and psychotherapy for 25 years. In addition to its Person-Centred Post Graduate Certificate and BACP-accredited Diploma course, it also has been the only university in the world to offer a Post Graduate Certificate in Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy. Focusing is an evidence-based practice, and has a large international cohort of practitioners, united by The International Focusing Institute in New York. The UEA's Focusing course is one of only a handful of avenues to become qualified in the UK as a Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapist.
The Counselling Department (Centre for Counselling Studies) is separate from the University Counselling Service. For clarity, this petition is opposed to the closure of the Counselling Department (which trains counsellors), not the counselling service.
The UEA is situated in the county of Norfolk, where there is a real need for mental health provision. Closing this department will mean a significant reduction in qualified person-centred counsellors in Norfolk in the future, and this obviously will have an impact on those in need of this valuable provision. In addition, vulnerable clients who access services offering free or low-cost counselling in Norwich will be directly affected. Trainee counsellors at UEA take up unpaid placements each year with these services, enabling them to offer counselling for free or at low cost. With no trainees from UEA, additional strain will be put on these services, and the clients in need of them.
This petition is in collaboration with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Union (PCU).
